Mediterranean Sea
The Mediterranean Sea is a sea that is connected to the North Atlantic Ocean through the 14 km wide strait of Gibraltar. It is surrounded by Western and Southern Europe, Anatolia, the Levant and North Africa. It is the third largest region of the Atlantic and has an area of around 2.510 million km2. It is only recent that this sea became part of the Atlantic Ocean, as geological evidence indicates that 6 million years ago, the Mediterranean was cut off from the Atlantic. The Sea has been an important route for merchants since ancient times and played an important role in shaping the culture of the modern societies surrounding it.
